OK, here's the scene.

My bed is a futon that is about.... 8" or so off the ground, on a platform. I love this; I know some people look down on futons, but I really like having a bed that is set low on the ground, and even with a "real mattress" I'd want to use this kind of base. For a nightstand, I have identical blond-wood-veneer cube tables on caster wheels, one on each side. These are about 6" taller than the upper surface of the bed (which is maybe 14" or so off of the floor). On the side of the bed I use most often, I have a lamp, which looks like the Eiffel Tower and has a square black shade (which I have to replace, because the movers didn't pack it correctly and it's completely ruined). The shade is like... a faux nubbly silk, and the square echoes the shape of the table and the shape of the base of the lamp.

My question is: given that I have an identical table on the other side of the bed, and this is My Furniture for the forseeable future, should I pick up another Eiffel Tower lamp for the other table? They don't cost that much. However, having two sort of works against the novelty of having an Eiffel Tower lamp in the first place. I could go with no lamp on that side (which is really unbalanced from a decorating standpoint, but suits my lifestyle), or I could put a harmonious but not identical lamp over there (I'm thinking some kind of silver "candlestick" lamp with the same shade on it).

Any opinions or ideas?
Another Eiffel Tower, a similar but different lamp, or nothing?

I agree that having two Eiffel Towers kind of defeats the uniqueness of having one Eiffel Tower.

How about something with a similar theme--either something Parisian, or some similarly tall monument?

that's a cool idea, but might take more time and expense than i really want to put into this. it would be a good thing to keep an eye out for over the years, though.

for a view of what i'm probably going to do, check out cydniey's reply. it's a plainer lamp in similar size and color. i'll try to get something a little more complex than the one in the pic she posted, but along those basic lines.

i'd go with a different lamp to off-set it. i think it's pretty cool that you have an eiffel tower lamp though.
you should take pictures :D

I will! when i get everything together and also when i find the digital camera. not for at least a few weeks, but eventually, there will be a red flokati rug and cute birdie curtains and the striped "swell" sheets that they sold at target and many other fun-type things. ;)

"I know some people look down on futons..."

Bwahahaha! Look down on futons... Kinda hard not to, eh? *Snork* ;-D (FYI, I spend a few nights per week on one, and I love them.)

Anyway... I'd nix the whole second Eiffel Tower lamp straight away, as it smacks of mass production values and irrevocably lowers the charm of having just one. Certainly, you might put on the second table some sort of Parisian-style lamp to good effect.

Where did you get the Eiffel Tower lamp in the first place? I know you said, but I forgot.

Target. $30 plus cost of shade. That's not The Cheapest Lamp Ever, but it's reasonable, I think.

Mine is the chrome silver one; AFAIK they also sell a bronzy antique-style one.

i'm thinking that you need something rounded to balance all the squares.

we got a lamp at target with a square shade, but the base was simple brushed steel, a narrow cone with a ball on top, the light attatches to the top of the ball.

something like that would contrast the complexity of the tower, as well as add a subtle curve. the shade could be easily painted the same color as the tower's shade.

oh frell it, here's a picture of it:

i'm in manic designer mode, been playing sims, which for me is just building and decorating, can't stand the people in it, and i talked to a friend last night about things i'd like to do to her house.

I think it might be a little weird to put a rounded *lamp* on the table; where I've been getting rounds are things like, there is a round hole on the front of each nightstand door, to use as a handle. My alarm clock is Hello Kitty, like a plastic statue, which is very rounded. and there's always a round glas son the nightstand with water in it. I kind of prefer to go round with the accessories.

However... that lamp is pretty much what I was thinking of, and the shade is exactly the same as the one on the ET, I think, except mine is black (and ruined by the stupid movers, but I'm using it until I replace it anyway). I might prefer a slightly more complicated base, just to balance out all the visual interest of the ET, but that sort of almost-candlestick-style brushed steel was what I had in mind, and then I'd put matching shades on the two lamps.

also - ever since I found out about the "rosebud" cheat, that's pretty much all I like to do with the Sims either: design and decorate their houses. It's also my mom's favorite aspect of the game.

when we started to move into this place a few weeks ago, I felt like a Human Sim. Like, starting out with a bare minimum of furnishings, then running out to make more Simoleons so that I can buy a better coffee maker and alarm clock...

No, keep the Eiffel Tower unique.

However, I'll bet you could probably find another architectural landmark lamp if you surf around.

I hope so. But it has to be cheap (the Tower was only $30 plus shade) and it also has to be a sort of silver-chrome color. It would be perfect if I could find one shaped like Big Ben or something! (they'd even be on appropriate sides of the bed, haha... and most of my sheets are blue, so i could call it the English Channel.)

as it is, tho, i'll probably just end up getting something like what Cydniey posted above... a less complicated lamp of similar size and color.
