OK, here's the scene.
My bed is a futon that is about.... 8" or so off the ground, on a platform. I love this; I know some people look down on futons, but I really like having a bed that is set low on the ground, and even with a "real mattress" I'd want to use this kind of base. For a nightstand, I have identical blond-wood-veneer cube tables on caster wheels, one on each side. These are about 6" taller than the upper surface of the bed (which is maybe 14" or so off of the floor). On the side of the bed I use most often, I have a lamp, which looks like the Eiffel Tower and has a square black shade (which I have to replace, because the movers didn't pack it correctly and it's completely ruined). The shade is like... a faux nubbly silk, and the square echoes the shape of the table and the shape of the base of the lamp.
My question is: given that I have an identical table on the other side of the bed, and this is My Furniture for the forseeable future, should I pick up another Eiffel Tower lamp for the other table? They don't cost that much. However, having two sort of works against the novelty of having an Eiffel Tower lamp in the first place. I could go with no lamp on that side (which is really unbalanced from a decorating standpoint, but suits my lifestyle), or I could put a harmonious but not identical lamp over there (I'm thinking some kind of silver "candlestick" lamp with the same shade on it).
Any opinions or ideas?
Another Eiffel Tower, a similar but different lamp, or nothing?

Date: 2003-11-12 08:20 pm (UTC)for a view of what i'm probably going to do, check out cydniey's reply. it's a plainer lamp in similar size and color. i'll try to get something a little more complex than the one in the pic she posted, but along those basic lines.

Date: 2003-11-12 12:53 pm (UTC)Bwahahaha! Look down on futons... Kinda hard not to, eh? *Snork* ;-D (FYI, I spend a few nights per week on one, and I love them.)
Anyway... I'd nix the whole second Eiffel Tower lamp straight away, as it smacks of mass production values and irrevocably lowers the charm of having just one. Certainly, you might put on the second table some sort of Parisian-style lamp to good effect.

Date: 2003-11-12 12:59 pm (UTC)we got a lamp at target with a square shade, but the base was simple brushed steel, a narrow cone with a ball on top, the light attatches to the top of the ball.
something like that would contrast the complexity of the tower, as well as add a subtle curve. the shade could be easily painted the same color as the tower's shade.
oh frell it, here's a picture of it:
i'm in manic designer mode, been playing sims, which for me is just building and decorating, can't stand the people in it, and i talked to a friend last night about things i'd like to do to her house.

Date: 2003-11-12 08:11 pm (UTC)However... that lamp is pretty much what I was thinking of, and the shade is exactly the same as the one on the ET, I think, except mine is black (and ruined by the stupid movers, but I'm using it until I replace it anyway). I might prefer a slightly more complicated base, just to balance out all the visual interest of the ET, but that sort of almost-candlestick-style brushed steel was what I had in mind, and then I'd put matching shades on the two lamps.

Date: 2003-11-12 08:13 pm (UTC)when we started to move into this place a few weeks ago, I felt like a Human Sim. Like, starting out with a bare minimum of furnishings, then running out to make more Simoleons so that I can buy a better coffee maker and alarm clock...

Date: 2003-11-12 08:16 pm (UTC)as it is, tho, i'll probably just end up getting something like what Cydniey posted above... a less complicated lamp of similar size and color.
