I've been having a pretty good day today - quiet, but good.

I had every intention of going to the ceramic-painting place and/or the coffee-type-stuff place next door, but I decided not to. I took a shower and shaved and ended up not feeling like going out. Still PMS-addled, but it isn't bad. I just felt like doing things at home tonight. Setting my world in order brick by brick.

I finished Lullaby quickly, as predicted. It was compelling but the story kind of just... runs out at the end. Still probably worth reading. It's not sold as genre, but it is a horror novel. Next up is The Little Friend by Donna Tartt, which has wildly mixed reviews on Amazon.

There's never anything on tv on Friday night, so probably I'll just put on some music and get to that bricklaying.

that's the one problem i have with palahniuk, and it's similar in almost all of his books: once he gets to the twist, the rest of the book sort of rushes to a conclusion (which doesn't happen in survivor, and that's why it sits above the others) what i liked most about lullabye is the work he does with characters (although knowing lullabye and coma have already been optioned by david fincher and the fact Oyster seemed to be written with brad pitt in mind) the structure was better than choke, but once the "twist" about the book of shadows is revealed and the subplot about haunted houses is abandoned, it just kind of ends. because you know where the build ends up, the payoff isn't as good. (fight club goes in a very different direction than the movie, but the coda is out of left field)

anyway, i went on about that a lot longer than i planned to. yeesh.

plus, the stuff about haunted houses was more interesting to me than the grimoire-magical-realism stuff. overall this felt like chuck's bid at doing a jonathan carroll story. (probably most similar in tone to "a child across the sky", "after silence", or "from the teeth of angels").

i didn't see oyster as brad pitt AT ALL - there is someone who I saw, a young character actor, but I can't recall his name or what he's been in. i think brad pitt is a little too old these days. oyster seemed like he was supposed to be around 22.

i guess it could be jared leto playing oyster (another fincher favorite and about the right age) i remember thinking oyster was a very tyler durden-esque character, and the physical description was of a "legends of the fall" era pitt. anyway, i fear that this book will become a sort of "fight club 2" in terms of casting (which is a shame, considering that none of the actors in fight club are appropriate for lullaby) but anyway, maybe it won't happen.

and yes, the haunted house idea was a better plot device, but i knew it wasn't going to last after the flash forward.

the guy i'm thinking of is a young, reddish-blond-haired actor, who somewhat resembles the guy who played Big Pete on The Adventures of Pete & Pete. But I guess Jared Leto could do it, and also maybe Heath Ledger would be OK for the part as well.

The odd thing was that although I agree none of the FC actors would be right for any of the parts in this book, the narrative voice in my head, of Carl, was very much Edward Norton - especially whenever he said, "These noise-aholics. These quiet-ophobics." Maybe because I can hear Norton saying that with the appropriate measure of sarcastic bile in his voice.

i want to be what killed the dinosaurs

i'm drawing a blank on the actor (although the fun mental picture of pete and pete makes my day a little brighter.)

i think palahniuk's started writing with the fight club cast in mind, because i heard edward norton saying it to. there's even that role for meat loaf in the paramedic (although, i think that would be more interesting with someone like john goodman or abe benrubi)

anyway, read survivor and let me know what you think. it's a little more gimmick based than lullabye, but it works in ways this one doesn't.
