lost ladies and jaffa cakes.
Jan. 28th, 2004 02:03 amSo The Bald Artiste and I mutually decided to weasel out of the Cure Thingie. There was a range of reasons why not to go: I wasn't feeling great, he had a meeting after work, the Thingie turned out to be a happy hour affair that was taking place much, much earlier than I thought it would be, it was snowing fairly steadily, and best of all, I'd washed all my bras last night and fallen asleep before hanging them up to dry. I *did* throw one in the dryer so I'd have something to wear, but I figured that having forgotten to rinse and hang them last night was kind of an omen of the "haha you go nowhere today" variety. I was sleepy all day, with a weird head/shoulder ache. So I ate leftover pasta, and went nowhere.
Finally found Jaffa Cakes (the best cookies ever), except they are not Pim's or "Jaffa Cakes" or sold in either the British food section or the cookie section. Nope. They're sold in the Polish section (what do you think of this,
internautte?) and are called "Delicje" and come in orange or raspberry flavors. I'm very thrilled to have noticed them. Except that now I keep eating them. For the depriveduninitiated, Jaffa Cakes are a kind of cookie that is a small cake round topped with orange jam or marmalade, with the orange-topped side then covered in chocolate. They are also heaven in a package. And they go fast.
Got a xmas card from
hilarykay today - thanks Hil. :)
Found out that this really nice lady who I met about 16-18 years ago killed herself. I only spent a day with her, but I thought she was the coolest, and I suppose when I thought about it that I thought she'd been dead for a while. She was a teacher of my uncles' who they'd stayed friends with over the years, and occasionally gone to visit, and I was once taken along on a visit. She must have been in her late 50s or early 60s at the time. She was the lady with the gravity inversion table that I hung from for three hours straight. She also had either Far Side or Bloom County or Calvin and Hobbes books that I read while we were visiting - I remember her as being sophisticated (a very nice, arty, NYC-ish apartment in Cleveland) but also warm and funny. A real lady, a cool lady. Anyway, she committed suicide within the last day or two because her daughter had put her into a nursing home. We found out about this around 9PM tonight, and since then... neither I nor the momster knew Maryellen well enough to be really really upset, but the mood has definitely been somber around the house this evening.
