Jan. 27th, 2004 01:56 pmHappy birthday to
mirandathejoy,
turquoise_dream, and
zebra. Popular day!
I wrote a decent-length entry last night about having a headache, getting stuck at Meijer for hours on an empty stomach, knitting mittens, and watching the Eddie Izzard show Glorious on VHS borrowed from the library. I couldn't get online to post it until today. Semagic (the LJ client) ATE it, even though I saved it. Well, you get the idea. I didn't have a great day yesterday, but it had redeeming qualities.
Oscar nominations are out - JOHNNY DEPP FINALLY GOT NOMINATED FOR BEST PIRATE... I mean, ACTOR. He won't win, but he has deserved to be nominated so many times in the past... such a chameleon... that I'm really pleased. Also, if anyone recalls my Cold Mountain diatribe of the other day... ha. Vindication. Wasn't even nominated for Best Picture. Can't really believe that Master and Commander was nominated; I saw it, it was pretty but kind of dull. And whoa, nomination for Djimon Hounsou, good on him! Look for Sofia Coppola to win a screenplay award but probably not a directing award. Acting will probably go to Sean Penn or Bill Murray. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a Return of the King sweep next month; Peter Jackson & co. deserve it, for making a 10-hour-or-so-long movie that I'd actually want to watch. (Well, come on, if it wins, you know it's really for all three films in the trilogy, just like Nicole Kidman's award last year was really for making Moulin Rouge and The Others in addition to The Hours, and for getting dumped on her ass by Tom Cruise and immediately thereafter having a miscarriage. It's the Butterfield 8 Memorial Award - everyone thinks Elizabeth Taylor got that one for sympathy reasons.)
The Thingie I'm going to tonight, to clarify, is not a release party with the band, it's just one of those promo things that clubs do when something cool comes out, where they play music from it, and maybe give away some posters or sampler cds, or have door prizes, or etc. If you want to go be pouty at the feet of an Actual Cure Meeter, I refer you to
katesterbp, who went backstage at a show a few years ago, & met everyone but Robert. Anyway, I have a rotten headache, left over from last night, and I still haven't quite decided what to wear. I am currently watching a show on bog mummies, and considering taking a nap.
Latest thing discovered to have been destroyed by the movers: McSweeney's #4 (I think - it's the one with all the booklets in the white cardboard box). The outer box is crushed. If I ever wanted to sell it, they've knocked out at least half of its value. They also damaged McSweeney's #3, and it's only sheer luck that a bunch of valuable signed first editions didn't also get damaged. We hates the tricksy movers.
