Today was shockingly like yesterday in many respects: I got up at 8AM and I spent a few hours in the freezing cold at the storage compartment (which is not climate-controlled). But I wore my winter boots, and I wore my down jacket, and a sweater instead of a shirt, and... um.... leg warmers. I hate leg warmers, but they were really helpful today, to, you know, warm my legs. I went through stacks and stacks of overstacked boxes, having to check anything I didn't pack, and by the time I left, I had shifted at least half the boxes in the compartment (20'x20', and full except for paths).

Before going, I unpacked the van of yesterday's haul. I found out that what I thought was my UPS and connection cords for Fat Man, at the bottom of a box, was actually two baskets filled with dusty pinecones. PINECONES. It was that anticlimactic. Insult to injury, my copy of Perdido Street Station was lovingly smooshed over the basket shape in the box and now has a basketlike curve and a basketlike imprint across its back cover. But I also found that I accidentally did myself a huge favor - I was upset because I didn't think I'd be able to find my DDR-Konamix cd for my Playstation. It turns out I never took it out of the unit to properly pack it.

Also found out that any single box of books they packed and didn't damage was so overpacked that I couldn't lift it. (Hint to movers: I did a ton of research before I started packing my books, which fill about 40 small boxes. Books are properly packed, first of all, lying flat: NEVER on end, any end, or with pages presented to things above that can crush them. Second of all, you should not fill the box more than 2/3 to 3/4. Fill the remaining space with a soft, lightweight packing material. Packing peanuts are great, but towels and sheets are OK too.)

Never ever hire All My Sons to move your stuff.

Also today: finally got the dog bathed. She is much happier and we are much happier around her.

Had dinner - a reward for all the hard work and broken nails at the storage compartment - at Ba Sho. Sukiyaki. My mother tried to talk the Mama-san (that's what the waitresses call the manager/owner/hostess) into letting us borrow the metal cookpot that the sukiyaki comes in. This did not fly, of course. But it was funny. I mentioned that we should bring some kind of Tupperware next time. They don't do carry-out at Ba Sho, so they don't have much in the way of takehome containers. Mama-san told us where to buy the sukiyaki pot for ourselves.

We drove over there & of course it was closed, but I checked out the yarn shop in the same plaza and got some Eucalan, which is a special goo for washing wool (sweaters, etc). It was a nicer shop than I expected. Went to Barnes & Noble looking for the new Vogue Knitting - not out yet, but I got Games mag and, finally, some blackberry sage tea, both of which I've missed. I've had trouble finding them around here. Then I came home and did some laundry, which is boring except for two things:

- I had to wash my down coat because of the dust in the storage compartment. In order to dry it, you need three clean tennis balls. I got the tennis balls when I picked up the doglet from her grooming appointment at Petsmart. Got home and found the coat still had too much soap in it, so I ran it through without soap, and this all resulted in it not being put in the dryer until 9:30. Well, all those tennis balls bouncing around sound like a horserace. I had to turn it off to go to sleep.

- I found lots of linens I've been looking for (my duvet cover, the rest of my Swell Stripes sheets, my pillows, etc), so I've been washing and fluffing those.

I also found candles, sleep masks, heatable booties that will be really nice to relax in over the next few days, my ugly but warm fleece robe, my knee-high lace-up leather boots... the creature comforts are starting to come out. I'm so happy to see most of these things.

I second that question.

Oh, shoot! I meant to write why, but I was really tired. :) OK, it's to fluff the down. It adds some agitation to the dryer load. It keeps the down from settling in one place due to the circular motion of the dryer. etc.
