OK, I have a doc's appointment in 3 hours, and to keep myself busy, I am making pumpkin spice bread. It's almost done. This bread mix's package recommends that you try cream-cheese frosting with the bread, recipe conveniently provided.

I have an unopened package of cream cheese purchased just for this purpose.

The problem? Its sell-by date was MAY 19TH.

So what do you think -

try using the cream-cheese to make the frosting (as long as it isn't noticeably moldy or anything), cos it's only been out of date a few weeks, and heck, it's CHEESE, or

do without frosting, you crazy freak. what, you want food poisoning or something? you want a repeat of the outdated yogurt incident that occurred when some jackass in the college cafeteria neglected to take the yogurt that was past its sell-by date out of the case, and you ate it, confirming that even yogurt can go very, very bad?

If it doesn't taste sour or anything.. I think it's still good. Cream cheese holds up pretty well:) but then again.. you never know.

I'd say since it's unopened, you're probably pretty safe. Just make sure it doesn't smell bad, and maybe taste a tiny bit of it, and if both tests turn out positive, go for it.

if its unopened its most likely fine. snif it and if it doesn't curl your toes its fine. hell pinch an end of it and taste, that won't make you hurl all over yourself and will convince you if its good or not. but really i think it will be fine.
the cream cheese i used in my last cake had a sell by day of something like april. it was just fine. cream cheese if unopened will last a long time. it lasts even longer if you keep it frozen. ;)

Cream cheese gets distinctly blue and furry when it's bad. If yours isn't blue and furry, and doesn't smell like it's on the verge of being being blue and furry, you're probably okay.

(Says the girl who doesn't eat dairy.) :)
