what the...?

I have a Zip100 drive. It's a couple of years old. It has not experienced "click death" or anything - it seems to be functioning properly. It has a parallel port connection.
I have 4 blank discs for it which were still in their wrapping until a few minutes ago, when I was trying to get some mp3s I had downloaded off of L's computer so that I may eventually put them on my new one. I already managed to move the majority of the fonts and small programs.
To shorten the story somewhat, I am finding that with nothing on it, a brand new zip disc is showing itself at about 70% full and will accept something like 25mb of material. Some of the other discs will accept slightly more material, but not a lot. One of the discs seems to be fine.
Again I say, "What the...?"
*flummoxed*
For years I had very few computer problems. Occasionally a modem would fry, but other than that, things ran pretty smoothly. Now, in the past half a year, all hell has broken loose! It's like a Murphy's Law version of the Y2K bug, all focused on meeeeeeeeeeee!
(and there was much whimpering and sobbing, and yea and verily she began scouting out USB peripherals.)
