I just copied this from my knitting blog. I don't feel like typing it over.

Very, very upset today because of the Space Shuttle. I live really near Cape Canaveral; many of my good friends work for NASA in some capacity. The shuttle was supposed to land just a few miles away from here. (If it was going to blow up at all, I'm glad at least that it didn't blow up here, in what I assume is a more populated area than the affected area in TX.)

Aside from the people in the shuttle, I have a feeling that this will negatively effect the local economy. We have a couple of companies that aren't technically NASA but work with them a lot - in semiconducting, electrical engineering, software creation, etc - and are the other major local employers. The industries here are basically tourism and aerospace stuff. After 9/11, the local Air Force base, which is located just off SR A1A, closed down the road in front of the base for several miles. People who had small businesses on this stretch of road (or just above it and depending on its traffic) were hit very hard. Now the road is open, but the base has a high new wall around it.

I didn't like my schedule, so I stayed up all day so that I could get to bed at a decent time and, um, see daylight after 10AM and stuff. Went out in the late afternoon so that my mom, who got her loan check (but it won't clear for almost another week) as well as her pension deposit (cleared, but used to pay bills & stuff) could pay off her Best Buy bill. Found out that Best Buy doesn't take in-store card payments. I did not buy the Zwan cd yet - wanted the special edition, which they didn't have. In an odd reversal of oddness, my mom had given me $20 from the $100 I lent to her. (I lent it to buy Wenzel food & the new crate; it was my xmas present from my dad, and all the cash I had.)

I went to Ross & found two really cool shirts. One is a long-sleeved DKNY Jeans shirt, black, with very slightly puffed sleeves (feminine gather at the top, but not a big pouffy puff), grommets and lacing at the back waist, and a really cool huge off-white applique patch on the front, done to look like a tarot card woodcut. I think it's sourced from The High Priestess, or maybe old Howard Pyle illustrations? It has some muted gold metallic ink & is done in sort of neutral-antique ink colors. The other shirt is a blue heavy georgette button-down by Bisou Jeans; it has a nice darted princess-line shape and a deep V-neck. The cuffs can be folded back to look like French cuffs, or can just go over the palm of the hand. The color is a deep aquamarine blue with small, medium teal polka dots. It's very Robert Smith, overall. CJ is going to try to fight me for it. ;)

Bought the new crate for Wenzel. It's great, much nicer than her old one and big enough to be her crate permanently, I think. It's a Petmate Deluxe 30" crate with rounded corners and a strong enamel finish. Also trying new Bil-Jac peanut butter treats, and got a new scratch-board for B-cat. He likes his "alpine scratcher" (the kind that makes a little ramp), but the store didn't have any in stock.

I went to Barnes & Noble and didn't buy anything, though I did sit around. Then I came home and went to sleep, but not before seeing the entertaining spectacle of N-cat jumping delicately on top of the new crate and trying to move around, with Arwen Isobel in it. Hey, buddy, I know that it LOOKS solid up there because of the sheet, but you do realize you're walking on wire mesh, right?

Probably true, although the exact debris field seems yet to be completely determined. Last I heard there had been an apartment fire in a very highly populated area of north Dallas that was likely related to shuttle debris. I have no idea if that was confirmed.

But yeah, it seems that most of debris landed east of D-FW. Thank god.
