I meant to write here about how I spent today, but I'm very tired and need to go to sleep. I'm supposed to hang out with [livejournal.com profile] hyper_ballad tomorrow, while she is home for the holiday... maybe will also see [livejournal.com profile] katesterbp? K. keeps making noise about "presents from Korea" - mmm. asian pop culture love.

My ankle hurts, because I wore my pointy-toe kitten-heel mules out to dinner tonight. They aren't too hard to wear, but I have a tendency to turn my heel in kitten heels, and there isn't enough padding under the ball of the foot in the shoe. Other than that it's a lovely dressup shoe & I like it better than the other mules I have, which are cute and a little more stable, but far less comfy. (hoo boy.)

I also wore a black dress printed with red cherries and white polkadots with a vaguely 1950s shape to it (seam below bust, flared skirt) and a lace-trimmed sweetheart neckline, and a black cardigan sweater with embroidered cherries on it, and garters with stockings that kept creeping down while I was sitting. I had a double string of graduated fake pearls that would have looked cute with the dress, except that they're kind of painfully too small for me. My neck isn't that swanlike. ;) My hair was up in a very decorative bun arranged around this small hairtie I have that is two very twisted coils of hair about the same color as mine. Red lipstick and neutral eyeshadow. And it was massively fucking cold outside by the end of the evening, so I was glad that I had thought to bring and wear my nice leathery leather coat. Mmmmm, bovine goodness.

I bought the newest Cometbus, and you didn't.

Oh, yeah, dinner rocked too. but I'll memorialize it tomorrow. definitely the best "restaurant thanksgiving dinner" ever (ever = past 4 yrs). x0 to wolfgang puck, you funny little germanic celebrity chef you.

oh! sometimes they get called "sabrina heels", since along with ballet flats they are very Audrey Hepburn.

however, some weird things - the mags say oh, they're the comfortable choice, etc etc, but they really aren't. the heel placement and diameter makes them really wobbly. they DO put less pressure on the ball of the foot by virtue of the lower heel, but i find i can't walk on them on uneven pavement, and i'm still prone to slipping, twisting my ankle, etc.

also, these are kitten heels:

these are NOT kitten heels, regardless what the site is saying:

and on this page, they tell you kitten heels are out, right next to a pair of recommended knee boots with kitten heels. go figure.

yes! that first link is one of the things i came across. those shoes are adorable. not to mention that cartoon cat at the top of the page, rowr. as long as we are on the fashion tip, what the heck are "winklepicker courts"? they're "in" according to that third link of yours. that list of ins and outs just cracks me up. if it were me writing the article, i would make up a couple things just to see if i could get people to wear them.

"courts" or "court pumps" are a type of shoe, usually with a louis heel (which is the sort of curvy victorian heel that looks kind of like a more stable version of the kitten heel). i think the heel is usually like 2"ish. "winklepickers" are usually more known in UK-influenced areas; they're shoes with really pointy toes. you can see some at vixensandangels.com i think, under the Underground Shoes area - either unisex gothic or men's - they should have some super-pointy shoes listed as "winklepickers".

incidentally, i learned almost everything i know about footwear styles and what they're called from - i wish i were joking - the alt.sex.fetish.fashion FAQ, years ago. i didn't learn about kitten heels there, but they have a TON of shoe terminology... for obvious reasons! haha. i could never be a fetish spud, but a lot of the shoes are really pretty... ballet heels are especially stunning. on the other hand i hate things like stilettos with locks, things that just look out and out tarty.

wow thanks for the mini-education!

my theory is that pretty much everyone has a shoe fetish. it's hard to grow up in our society and not fetishize women's clothing (for men and women), and shoes are especially easy.

so which is tartier, stilettos with locks, or those like 6 inch platform heels made of clear plastic?

number 255!
although, they don't have the Louis heel. i guess it might be optional. i used to have a pair of shoes that looked just like the ones in the pic exc they were suede, no rhinestones, and the heel curved OUT a little at the back, instead of in and then out again like a louis heel would do. it was sort of a "c" shape with a flat bottom and top, with the curve of the C at the back of the heel. weird, dude. i'm not sure if that tongue effect is necessary to the style or not either.... ie, if it's a defining characteristic...
