This really shouldn't turn into a "knitting journal" (though the ones I've seen, like wendyknits.com, are interesting if you're into it - she knits some complicated stuff pretty quickly, it seems like she does at least a sweater per month). But lately it's what I've been doing if I've been watching TV or a movie.
I got in the habit at my dad's house, because he likes to check a bunch of movies out from the library every few days and watch 2 or 3 movies each evening... when I was there, he didn't have cable (he got it just before I left). Tiny little living-room, uncomfy little sofa... he should just get two big armchairs and get rid of some of his clutter. I'd curl up on the sofa with my Dr Pepper Red Fusion and my Urban Knitter halter-in-progress. (I'm getting near a spot where I have a question on the pattern, and I'm so thrilled that I just acquired the email address of one of the designers, Jessica Thomas, from Knitty - hopefully she will be willing and able to answer my little question.)
Anyway, I'm prefacing with that because, last night, I tried to make this hat I have a Noro pattern for - it's a weird sort of elfin-kerchief-looking thing made in a rainbow yarn. The instructions don't make much sense, but I finally figured out that it's some form of Fisherman's Rib or Half-Fisherman's-Rib, which is a thick ribbed pattern with some eyelets in it. The current Interweave Knits magazine (which I think has the most stylish patterns of the US magazines) published a little Rebecca (popular trendy German/Swiss knit mag) supplement with a Half-Fisherman's sweater in it, using a slightly simpler form than my info book has. So I went for that, and learned the stitch last night. I messed up in the third row (of a three-row repeating pattern), but only by one stitch, and I know what my mistake was. So, I'm feeling pretty proud. I did have to tear out what I had done, but I should be able to make the hat within a week or less. This is really good news because it means I'm making PROGRESS and actually LEARNING STUFF... getting ready to start tackling "intermediate" projects, maybe.
I really want to do this amazing sweater (go look! opens in new window!), but it's way beyond me in skill and I can't afford the kit right now, anyway. Alice and Jade Starmore design some of the most beautiful and difficult patterns. I swore I'd never do Fair-Isle - I just don't like much of it - but it would almost be worth it for that sweater. I'm thinking that I might make a Lopi my mom wants, first, as practice. (it's the Lopi in the "best of the yarn companies" thingie in the current Vogue Knitting.)
Today I haven't done too much but read, eat dinner out at Panera, go to a bookstore looking for the second book (The Lady of the Sorrows) in that fantasy series I'm reading, etc. The momster was kindly going to spring for it (in hardcover! and the new issue of Beadwork too!) but had a zillion problems getting her credit card approved. The issuing bank approved it, but the national credit-checking company who the store goes through wouldn't, and the bookstore workers (4 of them, incl the manager) could not figure out how to enter the override code. 30 minutes, 3 employee procedure manuals, half-a-dozen telephone calls. End result, we are picking the stuff up tomorrow. CASH IS GOOD.
I'm now going to go... um... watch something or other, and work on trying that half-fisherman's hat design again. maybe even dye my roots so i don't look like debbie harry anymore. or hey! make the hat and use it to hide the roots... yeah... that's the ticket...

Date: 2002-10-09 11:40 pm (UTC)i've just started knitting again for probably the first time since i learned to do it in high school, so it's nice to see other people doing cool projects that are way beyond me at this point. hopefully it'll be inspiring ...

Date: 2002-10-10 01:27 am (UTC)most of my projects (except the halter top, which is a LITTLE bit harder) are pretty easy, because I haven't been able to afford to do anything really large. I have some pink and green furry yarn that I need to use up (3 skeins each color) and I can't decide whether I plan to make a kitty hat with it or a stripey scarf. (I think i might make the hat with the pink and legwarmers or a cowl or something with the green...)
