Lately I feel like I'm slipping away... not in any personal real-life sense, but from LJ. I'm not abandoning my journal, it's just that in the last week or so I haven't had much to say that I thought might be even remotely interesting to anyone but me. It's an off phase. I'll have to work on that. I feel bad when I'm not posting the occasional weird link or friends-only cool downloadable file, and I'm just talking about what I did that day, and lately I don't even much feel like doing that, except as a bald statement of fact.

I've become really obsessed with the Random Kitten Generator lately. I posted the link the other day, but there it is again.

I'm about halfway through Sputnik Sweetheart by my man Haruki Murakami, but I don't like it as much as his other books that I've read. I think part of it is that I don't like the translation, by the newer guy who has done the last few. Philip Gabriel. I tend to prefer Alfred Birnbaum's work. Another problem is that the plot is taking forever to get anywhere... the central event just occurred, and now I'm in a story (which had better have something to do with the main plot, or else -) about why a character's hair turned white when they were 25. I've had this book for a year and this is the furthest I've ever gotten in it. After the Earthquake comes out this fall, I think... and so does White Apples by my other man Jonathan Carroll, whose last book (The Wooden Sea) left me with a similar feeling of vague disappointment.

Isn't that Kitten Generator fun? I love looking at all the kitties, especially since I can't have one of my own (stupid landlord and her rules!).

it's weird to think about how much difference a translation can make when you're reading a book that wasn't originally in english... i haven't read sputnik sweetheart yet, but i really enjoyed norweigan wood. i've gotten into more japanese music lately, but i can't say that i'm really into japanese (translated into english) novels...
