Lately I have been going to bed at what I am assured is a reasonable time (sometime around midnight) and getting enough sleep and stuff. This is very adult and boring. Keep your fingers crossed that it lasts, though.

Last night I stayed up a little past midnight to write a letter to C... it is the Japanese stationery tragedy of all time. Sheer envelope, romanji phrases (that say god knows what, but since they are made for a Japanese market by a Japanese company, probably nothing gross). Weird little alien girl stickers. Addressed in odd spots on the envelope. I used a turquoise metallic pen. I tried to ramble for longer than two pages, but I was really tired so I didn't really have the opportunity... I just ran out of things to say.

I bought a beautiful nail polish the other day at Walgreens... Liquid Euphoria was the brand, and the color was "Elated"... I haven't worn anything darker than red, and usually not even that, in a couple of years, but this was a pretty peacock color that looked green when tilted one way, blue when tilted the other. Unfortunately, it totally sucks... it's way too thinly pigmented, so it took like four coats to get a solid color, and it goes on streaky and gross. I'll be taking it back. :(
(this is what I get for straying from beigey gold and pink colors, I swear...)

I have a burgeoning ear infection (which is basically a sore throat that feels connected by a string to an achy ear), but I am going to the ice show tonight anyway. I have to figure out some "comfortable" way to go from 80+ degrees outside to "interior chill"... and look swanky doing it. Wish me luck! :)

I could translate that romaji for you...

I also have a collection of the best Japanese stationery ever:

shampoo
A feeling is good very much if I shampoo my hair.
I close an eye while singing a song and wash hair.
Such a time it is good if I put on this hat.

I had some that were even better, but I wound up sending them to all my friends.

I am such a nut... whenever I go anywhere, to any city, on vacation, I mostly come back with Japanese stuff. At Xmas we go to EPCOT at Disney World, where I mostly just like to go to the Mitsukoshi Department Store in Fake Japan and buy stuff. It's not Xmas without Fake Japan, I tell you.

The stuff I wrote on last night was Shiro Petto, I believe... the little trembly white dog who looks a lot like BuruBuru Dog, only... more nervous. The text reads:

anoko dakewa nigatenano.
kottini konaideyo.

I recognize "dake wa" from my little "beginning Japanese study sheet", but I can't remember what it means! if it helps, in the pic Shiro Petto is tremblingly crawling away from a ladybug which s/he is also watching with great interest.

If you scroll back a little on my page, maybe to about a week ago, I posted pics of my desk area... I keep some of my j-stickers pinned to a cork board that's part of my desk. If I were to turn it I have a notepad that's full of great bad Jenglish, almost as fantastic as on my Mr Friendly backpack! :) ("this is a convenient pocket to sort out small articles." "have nice day, good time!") love! my heart, it swells. bad english by a native speaker makes me cringe but bad jenglish invokes feelings of extreme adoration in me! i don't know why that is. I do know that I try to avoid the term "engrish" that was popularized by engrish.com, because it just seems kind of racist to me, like that "flied lice" joke that I used to hear when I was a kid....

anoko dakewa nigatenano.

ano = that
ko = child
dake = only
wa = [topic marker]
nigate = poor (at), dislike (of)
na no = [by way of explanation]

It is either, "S/he's the only one who's bad at it," or "S/he's the only one we don't like." But in the second case, it would have to be some kind of slang usage that I haven't seen before.

kottini konaideyo.

kotti (kochi) = here
ni = [directional particle]
konaide = don't come
yo = [emphatic]

"Don't come over here!"

Poor Shiro Petto... Sounds like a cross between Kogepan and Buruburu.

oh! also, the matching envelope liner sheet (the envelopes are clear plastic) says:

futari sorotte furueteru.
it also has some hiragana above that which i cannot read, which might say "shiro petto" or something, if i look it up.

futari sorotte furueteru.

futari = two people
sorotte = all together
furueteru = are trembling

"They are trembling together."
