yo, people, is it time for a throwdown? that last friends-only entry, posted 7 hours ago, contained the thing that at least 6 of youse said you'd read and comment to confirm you'd read it and all. not a single one of you has fessed up to having read it yet! :P

i am having a huge argument with my momster, who thinks i can live on air and the occasional grilled cheese sandwich. i've been trying to get her to go to walmart superstore (only grocery open on a sunday night) ALL EVENING. it becomes more and more of an Issue as the night goes on because the lateness gives her another excuse. She hates spending money, hates grocery shopping, hates WalMart, and above all, hates going out this late at night (but also wouldn't go at like 8PM when I initially asked her to go with me. We have so little food in the house. I've been eating mostly cereal for the past few days BECAUSE IT'S REALLY ALL THERE WAS, and now we're out of milk. I don't know what the hell she eats aside from dipping into my food (there are no frozen enchiladae left).

Hungry hungry hungry, but we're leaving.

Last time I checked, it wasn't finished. I thought I'd wait until it was finished. The style looks good but to see how well style fits point, etc., can't say much of anything until we get to the end... also I understand you being nervous about comments. I hate showing my fiction to other people.

But since you mention it, I thought I'd ask: I'm always curious about how people get interested in Kabbalah. Actually it is pretty close to the topic of my dissertation (except going back about 100 years). It's a bit ironic, because very few Jews have much interest in or knowledge of Kabbalah, except as a sort of new-age philosophy; the real thing is at a bit of a right angle to much mainstream Jewish theology... Or are you just interested in it for this one character, who you perhaps learned about in a non-Kabbalistic setting? Just curious.

Hm. well, it should be finished (or at least in a recognizable first-draft state) by Tuesday. I'm workin'. I've had to do a rush job just to get the plot in, because details can be filled in after I figure out how to get from A to B to C to D to E (when before I sat down to write I wasn't totally sure what C and D were).

I'm not really hugely into Kabbalah, though I do generally think things that are a little arcane and specialised are interesting. (Interestingly, though, the JCC on the corner had some Kabbalah classes at the beginning of this year, which I thought was unusual.) Anyway, a lot of "angel lore" is related to Kabbalah stuff. This story came from a dream I had, and I wanted to use the idea that some devils were thought to be fallen angels, and in "fairy" countries, the fairies were viewed as demons when xianity came into vogue**. what if fairies, angels, pagan gods/goddesses, and demons were all essentially the same class of being? I used the eisheth zenunim primarily because the concept of this sex-angel/demon fit my idea. Samael comes into the story later, he's pretty debonair, I hope, and a little effete.

** (this is still around today; when i was a kid conservative Xians preached against The Smurfs, saying that they each represented their own "devil spirit"; now they do the same against Pokemon, and would do the same to virtually any show portraying small nonhuman creatures with particular qualities.)
