DIE PEDES DIE!

We called the exterminator, but they won't come til Monday or Tuesday. In the meantime, we're still infested. I just killed two a few minutes ago. I still haven't figured out whether they're centipedes or millipedes, but I'm not keen on checking out bug sites to find out more.

Two things, though. They seem to have no vertical abilities... if you put something in front of them they'll crawl around it rather than over it, and the only place I've seen them is the floor. They're also really really hard to kill. I jumped on one with my full weight on the carpet and it got up and walked away. Kill them on a hard surface and it makes a really loud sickening CRUNCH. To kill them on carpet you have to grind with your foot... which I cannot bear to do.

I will be so happy when this is over.

i feel kinda sheepish now.

i just picked one up on a piece of paper. (if possible, i like to put paper over them before i kill them. no bug juice on my shoes.) i looked at it and watched it and let it walk around the paper. it has tiny little antennae and was actually kinda shy, curling up on itself when it felt threatened. then it decided to *trust me*, and unfurled its antennae and started walking around again.

so i couldn't kill it. i put it in a jar that used to hold an air freshener gel... so it has an open top. then i took the jar and the pede outside and released the pede in the field across the street. "you have pleased me. you will be allowed to live! *genocidal dictator cackle*"

now i think i'll probably be catching and releasing as many as possible. i just hate killing them but there are enough to BOTHER me.

can you suck them up with a vacuum cleaner? you'd have to empty the bag, i imagine, but it might be worth a try.

on closer examination, they're kind of harmless and cute. they can't even crawl anywhere but the floor. it's just that when you're indoors and you can see more than one in your field of vision that it becomes seriously EW.
