We are infested!

Out in the yard, in the driveway, are all these strange bugs. The momster calls them "worms" but I think they're more like caterpillars or centipedes. They're long, narrow, fastmoving, and sometimes they "sidewind". At any rate, they're starting to come up into the garage, and their numbers are astounding. She opened the garage door tonight, to look for her lost keys in the car outside, and I had to grab a broom - knocked at least ten of the little things out in as many minutes. I only started seeing them a week or so ago, and now it seems they're everywhere.

Many years ago - I mean, the early 1990s, we had centipedes. They were fairly small grey things with clearly-defined segmented bodies, and they'd come in under the front door and die in the hallway. The current bugs don't look exactly like them... they're too small to see any distinguishing features, and appear to be smoother, and they're on the other side of the house, trying to make it through the garage and into the kitchen. A few have made it, but most either die in the garage or are carefully taken outside by yours truly. (Lately I try really hard not to kill bugs... I get them on a paper or whatever and I take them outside. If they're in the garage they'll die from bug spray, so I also try to "rescue" anything I see crawling around in the garage before it's too late.)

A month or two ago, the momster fired the exterminator we'd had since 1988, on the assumption that we were paying him $30/month to do nothing (he only sprayed inside about once each year). At the time I was a little aghast and told her he had still been spraying outside, and she replied "Yes, but only around the door on the front porch." Now she's planning to hire a new exterminator tout de suite. Whatever our new friends are, they're giving her the creeps!

As for me, I'm fascinated, and repelled. But I'll be glad to see them gone.

They don't sound like centipedes --the ones I see are huge --maybe around 6" and they seem like 1" thick and are black and fast --I only see one or two a year, but that's enough. From what I understand, [livejournal.com profile] finnegan is sort of an expert on them --he finds them tasty.

*shudder* maybe I should invite Finnegan down for a visit.

I'm pretty sure these guys are centipedes... I guess they could be millipedes but I don't think they are leggy enough. Maybe it's one of the few occasions when Florida got a *smaller* version of a bug from the north, instead of a larger one! (your roaches are cute compared to ours.) I have seen larger, scarier centipedes, but not in my non-foresty neighborhood.
