Jan. 22nd, 2001

Today I went out for a nice dinner, and then went and studied at a bookstore. I got Coupland's Miss Wyoming in paperback, which I had been dutifully waiting for all year last year. I'm trying to be good about not buying hardcovers.

Later tonight I am going to finish cleaning my bathroom (or at least start finishing cleaning my bathroom). It's starting to look a lot more "together". I'll probably do everything but the floor and bathtub.

Nothing much at all intriguing otherwise... an average Sunday.

I got a free 6-month subscription to W magazine a few months ago, and I must say I'm underwhelmed. The fashion spreads are harrowingly bad this month... a bad disco/80s amalgam. The "mod" spread is almost entirely cheesey things you'd expect to see on a rerun of Square Pegs or something, and a lot of the event photos of personalities are similarly bad. Why is fashion in such an "ugly" phase lately?
I forgot to mention earlier that the D-cat, Feline Supervillain that he is, chucked a hairball and a good deal of vomit up on my down comforter while I was gone tonight. I leave the house for a few hours... that's what happens when you leave your down comforter in the care of your arch-nemesis***, I suppose.

Cleaning a down comforter is mind-numbing. I'm not tackling the spot until tomorrow (it's not the only spot - there's some staining from the last time I dyed my hair - and I'll never see it, given that not seeing your comforter is what duvet covers are for). It has to be soaked, washed, rinsed, and hand-dried with a blowdryer. Hahahaha. It's too surreal for me to be upset about it.

***I kid. He's really very sweet. He is my constant companion. But he weighs almost 20 lbs, has bristly hair in siamese seal colors, has huge round blue eyes, and is, um, determined. He is a rock, he is an island, he will never, ever do something that he doesn't want to do, and if you walk by him without saying hello, he takes a swipe at your leg or foot with his claws. He has no idea that he's so big and heavy, and insists on being treated like a kitten who never sheds. & I certainly can't be mad at the poor little guy for getting sick.
It's cold and rainy and windy today, and mmm... my sciatica is acting up a bit. ("my lumbago!" - I feel like an old woman sometimes. the sciatic nerve runs from the lower back down a leg, and when it's pinched it pretty much makes it difficult to bend or to support your weight on the affected leg. it can make your butt hurt, too.)

I spent the afternoon at home doing homework and housework and then went and picked up some supplies I need (a smaller sketchpad for class, some more conté crayons, some bulldog clips) and stopped into the healthfood store. Limped around picking up food, and being happy that I was at the small store. Picked up some arnica gel too... it seems like Tiger Balm is basically the same thing as any other icyhot rub - menthol and camphor based - and I have something like that already. And I found a "daily" container for my vitamins! It's going to help a lot.

After I got home, my back was so cramped up that I went for a walk in hopes that it would loosen up. It was actually an amazing walk, even if it didn't help much. It's cold enough that I wrapped my head up like the Unabomber to cut the wind's chill, but warm enough that it's OK in my spring/fall jacket. The sun goes down early, so it was dark by around 6PM. I made it around the block twice (that's about 1/2mile). When the cramp comes out I'll try to walk at least a full mile.

So, now I am sitting with a crampy back and bottom, and working on drawings for class tomorrow. I'm going to drink hot cider and wear my old bodywarmer from dance class, and slather myself with that arnica gel to see how it helps (I don't want to take any pain pills today). I'm going to wash some of the clothes I might want to wear this week, and hang them up to dry. I'm going to get a little bit more done in the bathroom (I did some things last night, but I still have more work to do). Rock on!
