First of all, I wanted to thank everyone for the birthday greetings... there are so many! I haven't had the chance to read all the email ones yet (so far, a Buffygram from Miss Hell and a Neopets card from Ragdoll). but i will! you guys are just so sweet. *hugs*
Here's what I did for my birthday. I'm now officially 25. I feel like I really must be a "grown-up" now. ("must" as in "am" and also as in "should be".) Click if you want to read it, don't if you... don't.
I finally did get enough sleep to be functional, about five hours or so, and got up and got ready. My mom came home with my cake & some groceries while I tried to make my hair do something. Ha! I wrangled it with a blowout brush and hot iron for like 20+ minutes and when I finished I looked even more like the little Dutch boy than I had when I started (which is a hazard of a bob with bangs, I suppose). Eventually my mom arrived bearing FLOWERS! Tulips and roses and... hyacinths, maybe? Pretty, anyway.
Also got a package from Amazon.com... hmm! Who could it be? Were my suspicions correct? Well, one of my top suspects proved to be the culprit, so extra super special thanks to the fantabulous Xrys for the Serial Experiments Lain: Navi DVD! (now I just need to get a DVD player, hehe. this is my second dvd! I have incentive!)
I got all dressed in my bright blue tshirt and silk wraparound skirt & we changed the reservation to accomodate that we were sooo running late. Took a leisurely drive, got there just in time. I opened my cards from my mom on the way, and my present (which was cash in a card).
Ran-Getsu is a nice Japanese place that specializes in sushi, shabu-shabu, and sukiyaki; I go for the latter. We had the same chef/server as the last time we were there, who was very nice. We were seated by the water (which is kind of hard to get unless you have reservations or are there on a slow night - we had both factors in our favor) & had fun watching the numerous koi swim around. The restaurant is set up to overlook a garden court with a pond and bridge, so you don't feel like you're in a busy area when you're inside. There are koi in the pond who have been there for 15 years, which are huge, and then there are small koi about six inches long which are babies! I normally dislike most fish intensely, but koi are some that I find charming and enjoyable.
I mentioned to the waiter that it was my birthday, because he said it seemed that I had been there before, that I knew the routine, and I explained that I had been there a year or so ago and that he had been our guy last time, and that I came back especially for my birthday. I really didn't think they did a birthday thing there, but when our desserts came out, it was with a small drum corp and a very odd shamisen version of "Happy Birthday" playing over the speakers. I was pleased and mortified... because I didn't expect it in any way at all. They often do a drum show there, and I thought that was what they were coming out for, until they surrounded me! A little candle in my green tea ice cream! They continued to sing and play drums until at least 90 seconds after I had blown out the candle!
There isn't really any socially-sanctioned way to be "the birthday person". If you look too pleased, it seems arrogant. Most people are uncomfortable with the attention of that many people tuned on them. I had the entire restaurant! I almost sank into the floor. But it was very... um... festive. I think in the future I will throw birthday parties more often.
After that we drove up to the large Barnes and Noble near downtown Orlando, and I bookshopped for about an hour. I was ready to leave emptyhanded (the book I wanted to get, Murakami's Underground, seemed to be nonexistent in the store, and I know I can pick it up elsewhere), but my mom wanted to buy something, so I got a book called Becoming A Graphic Designer which she has labelled a "career education investment."
Then we drove home, & lit candles on my real cake and such, and I blew them out, and some wily creature made some of the candles relightable, so I ended up having to get a cup of water with which to pinch them out. Then I ate a big slice of cake with a pretty pink flower on it, and took some silly webcam pics. Then I went online, and now, full circle! :)
I'm probably going to bleach my hair tomorrow, depending on what kind of haircut appointment I can get for next week. Those are the plans, anyhow.
