If you make it in cotton or linen it WILL be hip. That's why you'd just have to make it out of acrylic! ;)
I actually read the pattern more closely, and actually, the entire dark part is knitted and the "fillings" are just embroidery on the top. So actually it's very little crochet and what's there is simple... I might just be able to teach myself to make it.
