I bought this really cool yarn on sale. I got enough to make a sweater, even. I was Happy.
Then I started looking for a sweater pattern. Needed to be about 3st/inch. This is a pretty standard "bulky" size. No problem. I have a little over 700 yards of this yarn, so it should be enough for something. I picked out a pattern written for bulky yarn at 3st/" and knitted a gauge** swatch to be sure. The yarn gauge was fine. Yay.
however, for some reason I was totally off on the gauge recommended for the pattern - i had it in my head that it was 3st/", but it's actually 2.25st/". what the...? how did I do this? furthermore, which sweater WAS i planning to make with this yarn? it's not the Serendipity cardigan from Hollywood Knits, so what is it? i'm sure there was one, with a gauge of 3st/", it's just not the one that I thought it was. Am I going to dig through every magazine and book I own, again, looking for The Pattern? augh. *sob*
**for those of you who do not knit/etc, gauge is how many stitches you have per inch of fabric. If you're off, you can go up or down a size or two in needles, but you can't go too far from the needle size recommended for the yarn, because otherwise the fabric will be too loose, and therefore weirdly droopy, or too tight and stiff. also, if you're off from the gauge recommended by the pattern and you don't change needle sizes, you will end up with a garment that doesn't fit. if you are knitting more stitches to the inch than the pattern suggests, and you follow the pattern, your garment will be too small; fewer and it will be too big.
