the freedom needs to bathe.
Mar. 18th, 2003 05:00 ammy dog never sleeps. she's over in her crate, supposedly in bed for the night, but still shuffling and snuffling around.
I am only awake because I took a nap early this evening. Going to bed soon. Played a scoreless game of Scrabble today that ended up being the best I've played in a long time... nice, long, creative words right and left. It's freeing to play without the score. Maybe will play a version in the future where the only score is about how many letters you get stuck with.
Also watched Hawk the Slayer, an early 80s fantasy movie about which the less said, the better. We remembered seeing it back in the day, when it was a cable premium channel staple. It features Patricia "Magenta/Livilla" Quinn in a silly blindfold with an eye painted on it and Jack Palance in a silly helmet/mask thing. So nostalgia drove us to pick up a copy on Amazon. NOSTALGIA SUCKS. IGNORE NOSTALGIA WHEN NOSTALGIA COMES A-KNOCKIN'.
All about French influences on the English language.
I'd like to say this is smart, but actually it's pretty inane. The problem is that most of them don't have purely French derivations: they're ultimately Latin. Another problem is that they came into the language mostly via the Normans, who A)had been living for a while in a part of the world that is now part of France, but was not at the time, B)were not Franks, and C)didn't exactly ASK the Anglo-Saxons how they felt about the linguistic influences. The Normans were ultimately from Northern Europe and, though they spoke French for several hundred years after the conquest, were closer to Vikings or Danes than they were to, say, Charlemagne. Finally, whoever wrote the article actually missed a few Latin/French influences even in the article itself - heck, the word "IN", for example.
and... I'm spent.
