I went to the laundromat and it was not entirely unpleasant.
An old man literally cornered me and told me about a trip he's taking to NY tomorrow, to go to a party for his son who is retiring after 20 years in the Navy. Then it turns out that he has a Navy family, as his other son has been on submarines for 27 years, and as he was himself in the Navy in WW2. He seemed like a nice man... from Brooklyn or Queens, I think. He was talking about how much he didn't want to be in the war, because he had just gotten married and had a newborn son at the time. This is what I could gather of what he told me, since I'm slightly hard of hearing and I was sitting inbetween two washing machines that were washing away. I had to watch his mouth as he spoke... I don't read lips or anything, but I find that if I am having trouble understanding people, it helps to watch their mouths.

After that I went down to the bookstore and bought myself the 13-hour cd set of the BBC's Lord of the Rings radio adaptation, the one from the early 1970s. It was a bit ouchy in the pocketbook, but I figure I can resell it when I come home. I just don't think I can deal with 18 hours of driving alone just listening to music... it will be nice to "hear someone talk" too. That's why I bought the set. I thought about buying The Corrections on cd as well, but decided to hold off for now, since I don't know whether or not I will actually like the story. I know I like the story of LOTR, and since I consider the books nearly unreadable on my own, it'll be cool to have the story told to me. I also bought the new Haruki Murakami and Banana Yoshimoto books. Required reading.

Oh, and before I did any of this, I stopped by the travel agency to pick up my maps and guidebooks. I have to compare the map they made up for me with the map I made for myself on MapQuest. I think they're pretty much the same.

Now I'm home.
