(no subject)
Sep. 24th, 2001 12:36 amI wrote this on 9/18, but LJ was down, so I saved it as a draft in my email. It's old news now. & not even all of the clearchannel stations are following it: I heard "Rock the Casbah" Friday night, for example.
But anyway...
this is so ODD...
Clear Channel Communications (which operates many fine radio stations, including my local favorite, Orlando's 104.1 FM) has issued a list of Songs With Questionable Lyrics. and for the first time in a week, I'm laughing about something related tangentially to the whole horrible mess.
because, you see, not only are reasonable omissions requested (like, um, "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" and "Burning Down the House"), the net has apparently expanded to catch any remotely popular song that even obliquely refers to any of the following:
-plane travel
-flying
-falling
-explosions
-crashing into something ("crash into me", dave matthews band)
-nihilism
-guns/bullets
-fire
-destruction
-criminals
-wind
-dust, especially if in wind
-missing people
-dead people, ghosts, etc.
-new york city
-any city-related catastrophe
-arab countries ("rock the casbah", "walk like an egyptian")
-anything by rage against the machine
-anything remotely interpretable as retaliatory
-"ironic" by alanis morrissette
-"what a wonderful world" by louis armstrong
(which people probably NEED to hear)
now, somewhere on this list have also fallen things like "bridge over troubled water", "johnny angel", "a world without love", "peace train", "ruby tuesday" (but not "paint it black"?), "morning has broken", "imagine", "he ain't heavy, he's my brother", and a few other barely explicable things. the only thing I can think of is that they might make people feel mopey and in need of a hug.
and absolutely, of COURSE, "99 Luftballoons".
and all this is making me want to dig out some cds. i haven't jumped around like a maniac to "99 luftballoons" in a while.
