So, what are some words that you'd put in a fairly aggressive spam filter, one that's going to send all spam to a folder, where I can scan over it to make sure it isn't Real Mail before I delete it?

so far i have penis/enlargement/horny/webcam/viagra.

any other common spam subject line words? i'm thinking of "inkjet" and "credit" maybe as well. how about "diploma"?

(re my current mood: being driven crazy in loco parentis, also irritated cos I can't get streaming internet radio to work. will probably go watch Cold Case and knit.)

gotta be careful because i do sometimes get things that are legit from, like, places i've ordered from (telling me about sales) or from my bank! but i did use some of these, thanks. :)

(I mean, i KNOW nobody has any reason to email me about a mortgage or vicodin.)

Honestly, I wouldn't bother with mail filters like that. Try looking for an anti-spam filter piece of software, but one that will allow you to check for false positives.

If I had a spam problem, I would probably use something like SpamTrap (http://www.spamtrap.net.au). This is an Australian company, but you might be able to find an American counterpart somewhere.

hahaha... too mcuh effort. i'm just playing around with the "mail rules tools" on my one mailbox that i use for anything that might end up getting spam. i'm just getting a lot and, since i was already filtering stuff like mail from specific friends and mail from A Word A Day into their own folders, I might as well try and see what I could do with spam subject lines. It won't catch all of it, but it'll be a lot less that I have to sort through.

(see candice's list above - i don't want to filter "hot" or "wet" because they have legit nonspam uses. however, i KNOW that "tits" and "cum" are not in the titles of emails I wanna read.)

AoL 9.0 has spam filtering stuff now -- I've yet to get an email that doesn't talk about hot wet teens so I'm just gonna pray no one I know uses hot or wet in their subject header.

I keep adding words as I get new forms of spam. Yesterday, I suddenly got 7 about an online degree program so degree was added. It's pathetic.

But seriously... Have you looked into Spam Assassin (http://useast.spamassassin.org/index.html) or Inbox Cop (http://inboxcop.com/index.cfm)?

In case no-one else mentioned it, you might want to add the words "refinance" and "refinancing" to your list. I would also suggest using "get [and/or 'earn'] your diploma" instead of "diploma" by itself.

In case you are curious about how spammers operate - and just how insidiously evil they are - you might check out Spamhaus.org (http://www.spamhaus.org/).

I think spammers ought to be shot. It is also my opinion that Carthage should be rebuilt.

diploma by itself is fine, this thing picks up subject line words. anything that "get/earn your diploma" would pick up would be picked up by diploma alone!

other than that... see my reply above to patchwolf. i'm too lazy to get a REAL spamkiller. i was just fooling around with mail tools to see how much i could screen out of this one cluttered inbox i have. (not the one I get lj replies in.) it's an experiment, and if it reduces the amount of spam i have to sort thru by 50% or so, it'll have earned its keep.

that's a good one, but i think i'm not gonna filter it for a while, simply because i get the OSU newspaper via email and sometimes rape shows up in its headlines... and if it does, i'd like to know, because my place isn't too far from campus. i'll see how much spam i get of that kind in the next few weeks though.
