In case you're sitting on LJ reading your friends list instead of watching the news (I'm getting ready to leave for school in an hour)...

around 9AM, someone crashed two planes into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in NYC. The upper floors of the buildings are just big gaping smoking holes. They happened 2 floors apart. There are also reports that 2 United jets might have been hijacked to do this.

aieeee. those poor people working there.

this is so sad and scary and fucked-up.

life is pretty much going on as usual in central florida (well, except that theme parks and the airport have been closed). people are starting to go get their kids from school.

but i never thought anything like this would happen in my lifetime. is this as bad as Pearl Harbor, or worse?

i tried to call Autumn & family (because her school is in lower Manhattan, tho I doubt she was there; her sister also lives in the W. Village), several hours ago, and I couldn't get through.

btw, I'd be surprised if the US didn't have the support of Japan. several of the hijacked planes were headed to California. California (esp LA) is a major major stopover for flights between the US and Japan. So I'm wagering that a noticeable number of people on those planes were Japanese.

Everyone, please be safe. Take care of yourselves. Don't let this stress you out so much that you don't eat or sleep or breathe. I am happy to be at home with my momster and the kitties. but I am so freaked out and sad about everything that's going on outside these doors.

geez. a few things mentioned by friends that need to be spread around:

1) do not go around bashing on people not of western european descent. they're americans too. they're hurt and horrified too. and they don't require american-ness to be upset about it, either.

2) get your ass out to the blood bank and give blood if you can at all (i know some ppl can't because of health conditions). they really really need it up in NYC. there are people there who are crispy from head to foot and they need transfusions if they are ever even going to have a slight chance of survival, so this is something really material you can do to help the victims of today's awful events. please please please go give blood.

I don't know why people are calling this a "very organized effort". it seems to me like it could be done by about ten people with guns and some knowledge, which would not have to be large so long as it was appropriately specialized. and they could be domestic rather than international.

this is surreal like godzilla. godzilla attacks tokyo. you don't really want it to happen. god.

by the way, today is my dad's 48th birthday, and my maternal grandfather's birthday too.. i can't recall his exact age, probably around 77 or 78. i called my dad but not my grandfather. what an awful birthday for both of them.

I talked to the local blood bank and they are also turning people away and asking them to come later in the week. They have all the donors they can take, today, even with volunteers and plans to stay open later, but they say donations are probably going to be down on Thursday or Friday and they will still desperately need a capacity crowd.

so, if you can't make it to a blood bank today, try the rest of the week. they don't just need donations today.
