A paillette (pronounced py-ET) is like a sequin, except in a few significant ways:
It's flat, rather than curved and faceted. (There are also flat sequins, but I don't think there are curved and faceted paillettes.)
The hole is at the top, not in the center. They're meant to hang and overlap.
