I liked Closer, yeah, and I did see it a few months ago. But that was with Tom and this time was with my mom. I didn't think it was as funny the second time, possibly because she didn't seem to think it was very funny at all!
Being Julia isn't slow at all... if anything, it moves a little too fast in parts. It's just not that deep and it doesn't reach any particular heights; the ten minutes of scheming bitchery towards the end that's supposed to be the climax and payoff is even pretty lighthearted. They reach for a seriousness in a way that I can't explain without dropping major spoilers (it has to do with the last shot and some of Julia's more desperate moments), but nonetheless I never really felt like much was at stake. It's sort of... cute, and slight, hoping to make an impression on its charm and wit, but ultimately kind of fluffy. I've seen worse in the same mold, and Annette Bening is pretty good in it, but I think it's not destined to become anyone's favorite movie. (Similar light quirky British period pieces: Cold Comfort Farm and Impromptu... the mood is much the same, but both of them leave more of an impression.)
