Hmmm. I don't know. Maybe things are done for attention, but not always for attention from *everyone* - just tribal attention. For instance, when I was really goth, I hated the attention I got on the street, and wanted to be left alone, and always felt judged - it honestly really *messed* with my self-esteem. But I did like positive attention from other freaks. But for the most part, I just dyed my hair purple because I thought purple was a pretty color and more "me" at the time than blonde was.
