What's up today? Well, I have terrible cramps. I went to Target to buy some cleaning supplies and left with an unplanned pair of really adorable Hello Kitty pajamas (as well as cleaning supplies). I would then have gone over to the house to, y'know, clean, but apparently my mom and Uncle Bitchy decided that this would be a Rilly Cool Day to hang out for an hour or two, as Uncle Bitchy had to drive his Custody Battle Kid back to Indianapolis today, and we're en route. I'm irritated, because Uncle Bitchy is the locus of almost every one of my mother's broken promises - specifically, if she's anywhere around him and away from me, she NEVER returns when she says she's going to, is usually days late. This has been a problem for years, and most recently it impeded apartment-hunting. He's very talented and can be sweet, but he didn't get the nickname Uncle Bitchy by sitting around being nice. (He got it by being a pain in the ass at my stepfather's funeral, if you must know.) & I wouldn't even be irritated today if my mom hadn't given me such a lecture yesterday about laying around in bed (ow cramps) and how I needed to go over and clean my parts of the new place today. Well, I can't even get the heck IN - she has the only key! I had nothing to do but drive back across town to the hotel and sit it out.
I really just need to live alone, don't I?
I'm working on it. Phase 1 is Fixing My Credit; that's what living with my mom for at least another year is all about. That will also be commingled with Having Health Insurance and Working On My Disability Claims Or On Being Healthier. New place is right down the road from a Borders, and so I am going to apply there, since I really like the stores and I have a ton of bookstore experience (have done almost every possible job in both retail and academic bookstores). But I think it will also be better when at least one of us is working and we lead lives more independent of each other. I'm dependent financially, yeah, but she's dependent on me... intellectually, I guess. I'm like a personal assistant; I help pick her wardrobe, I program her VCR, I suggest decent books for her to read, I fix her computer. Right now I am engaged in creating a mini-zine for her that is a "personal shopping plan" with the aid of the InStyle book she just got - I take the things that are her figure problems, What Not To Wear style, and I make a list of "rules" for each kind of garment, and then I make sure she has a couple of copies available. So I'm writing down all the Tummy and Small Bust suggestions and sort of codifying them, choosing the better option when they contradict each other, etc. And thinking, I spent thousands of dollars on art school for this? (I wouldn't be doing it if the momster weren't hyper-depressed about her wardrobe and figure lately. She needs to know that, like, if pants don't fit in the hip but they fit in the waist, you can have a tailor take in the hips and behind.)
Anyway, since I was 95% useless yesterday, all I did was sit around trying to play Black & White. That is one heck of a buggy program; when I use the key commands, it locks into zoom-and-pitch mode, so it becomes hard to navigate; it's TOO hard to navigate with a touchpad, so I prefer kb navigation to mouse navigation. I downloaded the patch but I haven't installed it yet - it may just wind up not working with XP and then I will have to play it only on Fat Man, who is still using W98. Other than that, and really kind of pathetic character design vis a vis the villagers, I like the game a lot. But I'll probably go back to Age of Empires II for a while, and to Civ3 when I get it unpacked. :)
