my poor kitty

I ended up not going out for dinner tonight because the B-cat is sick & I had to take him to the vet. Not sure yet whether or not he'll be OK; we have to see if he responds to medication.

When I woke up he had thrown up and pooped on the floor... he gets constipated, so this happens sometimes, and we usually just clean it up and give him some extra laxative. He takes a hairball laxative a few times each week, and refuses to eat any form of soft food.

Normally, when this happens, he's OK after he's, um, purged his demons, so to speak - doesn't seem sick. Today he was staying in one semi-secluded spot, not moving, not taking any of his favorite foods when we were eating them. Normally he demands them and gets very pushy about it, but today he wouldn't even accept them when offered. This went on for a few hours and we decided it was so out of character as to necessitate a call to the vet's office... who told us to bring him in ASAP.

He sat on my lap in the car (tho we carried him in and out of the car in his cage) and was pretty well-behaved. He didn't like being at the vet's office. His temp was elevated, and he seemed a bit dehydrated, so they decided to run some tests. They didn't really indicate anything specific (kidney problems, etc), but he had a high white blood cell count. The vet wants us to give him a course of antibiotics and then see how he seems to be feeling. It could just be a little infection, or it could be cancer. Whether or not the antibiotics work will determine whether or not they go on to test for cancer, etc.

THE LITTLE PATIENT

Needless to say, I cancelled dinner. We can go another night. Fortunately, B-cat seems to be doing a bit better tonight than he was before he saw his doctor... more social, more talkative. So I am keeping my fingers crossed for his health. He's only 11 years old, and he's very active and gets tons of attention. So hopefully it's just a little kitty illness from which he will quickly recover.
