A very old book called Stars Fell on Alabama, about the travels of a biology professor in the Deep South in the 1930s and his observations of racial violence and various kinds of Southern culture. It's fascinating and weird.

i have hansen's chess garden and it has been lying in wait for like two years. i just wasn't able to get into it. it came highly recommended from the jonathan carroll list though, they all seem to love it there.

you've been talking about tipping the velvet, i want to read that. it looks interesting.

Survivor by Chuck Palahniuk

and Irvine Welsh's Ecstasy tends to come in handy for a quick fix (ie. while I'm sitting by the stove waiting for curry to finish simmering) It's a friend's copy that she had me sign when he was in town last week. Haven't been able to return it yet, and I'm taking guilty advantage of the delay.
